Ramblings....

Believe it or not we have had five consecutive days with beautiful sunshine and highs in the mid-40's!! I think we have had more sunny days since I've been back than the two+ months we have been here! Still gets chilly at night but the days sure makes up for it.

I was offered an opportunity to teach English at the high school one day a week for the month of May. Wow...what a great opportunity; however, Erica graduates May 15th so I will definitely need to put this off. Don't panic...my lack of Polish language skills would not matter. I would facilitate conversations in English!!! Maybe some other time!

News of the Weird:

1) Today my apartment door bell rang. After peeking out to be sure it wasn't a Polish deviant I opened the door to a nicely-dressed woman speaking rapid Polish. After explaining to her I was not understanding her (in English - even though I do know how to say I don't speak much Polish in Polish) she asked (in very broken English) for a knife. What was most alarming were the hand gestures mimicking someone stabbing a person! So why not invite her in??? She couldn't tell me what kind of knife she wanted so I led her into my kitchen. She didn't want an ordinary table knife but instead a small, sharp, pointy knife. Instead of being alarmed, I was more worried about the dirty dishes sitting in my sink!!! What's wrong with this picture? As promised, she returned the knife very apologetically five minutes later. At least I had the presence of mind to say "do widzenia" (good bye). Nice way to meet neighbors I guess!

2) When I was walking in the Square today there was a teen-ager posing as a troll next to one of the various trolls around town. I figured she was posing for a tourist picture so I stopped to be sure I didn't walk through the picture. Odd, but she was all alone! Just goes to show there is no business like troll business.

3) No, you do not have to wear pink, suede boots to match your scarf. I wonder if the "no wearing white until after Memorial Day" holds true here??

Just Ramblings....

1) At our cultural immersion classes we were told to respect the Polish people's desire for privacy. As I've stated before it is common to NOT greet anyone with a "hello" or "nice day". Even a head nod is over the top. I figured it out today. Polish people have to maintain eye contact with the sidewalks so they don't trip on any cracks!!!

2) I saw Tesco stock fell Wednesday. NOTE: Tesco is a UK-based grocery store chain and the store we shop at in town. I suspect the stock dropped when it was discovered there were no potatoes in their Wrocław store.

3) Our apartment reeks. They are painting an apartment down the hall. It seems their paints are still solvent-based and stink to high heaven. Not only is it a raunchy smell, but the color they are putting on the walls almost makes you forget about the smell!

4) A "tipsy" is a manicure.

5) Why do I still stop to admire business clothes???? I wonder if I should start a line of "retirement" clothes? Or how about "trophy wife" clothes?

6) I watched my first reocorded show off the Sling Box today. Now if we could get some speakers I could untether myself from the computer!

7) I'm going to work on Craig to see if he will take me to a movie this weekend! Can't wait to ask for two tickets (bilety, bileta or biletych???) and a large popcorn!

8) We only had "deer in the headlight" looks on our face about 15% of our Polish lesson last night. Not too bad considering the three week hiatus. NOTE: Craig didn't finish his homework and I won't let him copy.

9) Oliver seems to have gotten over his jet lag and his bio schedule is back to normal!

10) We have to run to IKEA this weekend to replace some broken glassware that came with the apartment. Even with two of us it is not plausible to have only three drink glasses. I have a new name for IKEA..... It Kosts Extra for Actual quality!!!!

Enough of me...I better play the role of a stay-at-home-trophy-wife for at least 30 minutes before Craig comes home.
