Ready for the Weekend

The end of another interesting week here in Wrocław. Thursday (czwartek) has officially been crowned the weirdest day of the week because of the following:

To set the scene:
  • Oliver has ears the size of small satellite dishes and can hear the wind change directions
  • Oliver is also the most skittish dog I've ever ran across. He dodges away from plastic bags on the sidewalk - throwing his ears back in sheer fear.

Now for the story (and remember I can have a pretty juvenile sense of humor)...

Craig and I were taking a walk with Oliver Thursday night right before dinner. We were walking down the narrow, dark street leading to our apartment when Oliver dashed off the sidewalk with his ears back. Seems he heard something we hadn't. As we reached the end of a neighboring apartment building we glanced to our right only to find a man urinating on the side of the building (he didn't have enough bags to be the recycling guy so I have no idea who he was and why he couldn't wait to get home). Just as we realized what he was doing he farted (and I'm pretty sure he wasn't wishing us good luck [dobry fart]). His eruption caused Oliver to bark in fear!!! I'm pretty sure the guy jumped out of his shorts - or perhaps filled his shorts (at least he was only yards away from the dumpster)!!! It was all I could do not to laugh and/or snort.

Second story: As I've stated before we have two new security guards in our building; neither of whom speak any English. I stopped to introduce myself to him. Surprisingly, I was able to understand much of what he was saying. His boss happened to stop by and was able to translate some but I was dang proud of myself. I gave him a geography lesson since he only knew of New York and Alaska. I drew a map and pointed out Canada, Minnesota, New York, Alaska and Florida to help him figure out where we live. At one point I said something to him in Polish and he responded by telling me I talk through my nose and it sounds funny!!! I think the next time I see him I will greet him with dzien dobry you betcha!!!

Tomorrow is some type of musical celebration on the Rynek. I picked up a flyer from the tourist office but can't understand much of it. Today folks were busy setting up stages and tents on the Square. It is called Finał z Głow and features what appear to be 12 musicians or bands. It goes from noon to 8:00 p.m. We are having some of Craig's co-workers over for dinner Sunday night so we are planning on preparing the meal Saturday so we have time to take in whatever it is on the Square. More to follow...

NOTE: Potatoes have resurfaced at Tesco. Aspargus is now missing...
