Euro Cup 2008 - Cała Polska Kidicnje

Europeans take their soccer serious! Every four years the Euro Cup pits European National soccer teams against each other for the honor of the Cup. Kind of like the Olympics of European soccer. This year the Cup is being held in Austria and 2012 it will be in Poland - with Wrocław a featured competition location! All eyes are on Polish soccer right now and the world's eyes will be on Wrocław in 2012!

The town is nuts!!! Plac Sól - which is usually home to the 24/7 flower markets - now houses bleachers, a beer garden and a HUGE television screen to watch the matches. They've added TV screens to many of the outdoor eateries and the town is decked out in red and white. Poland's first game is Sunday (June 8) at 8:45 p.m. local time (1:45 p.m. central daylight time). We were invited to join some friends to watch the match at Plac Sól but would need to arrive around 5:00!! I imagine the Rynek is going to be wild tonight! I think we may pass on bleacher sitting and beer tonight. We will root the Poles on from our living room! Tonight's match has Poland facing Germany. Anyone having even the vaguest knowledge of European history knows that this match is bigger than any Vikings vs Packers rivalry ever!!! The Germans still refer to Wrocław as Breslau (the German name when the town was held by them). The magnitude of tonight's game is unmatched!! Police presence on the Rynek was big last night and I suspect it will be even more so tonight!

The Euro Cup runs through the end of June. ESPN is home to the Cup. If you want to make our stay in Poland even more pleasant please root loudly and often for them!

It was a pretty busy week. We had dinner with our friends Rich and Laurae at the American restaurant in town. They are entertaining their 18-year old niece for a month. It is nice to have a young person around. Just when you think you don't miss your kids.... We did manage to eat way too much but had a great time!

Friday was my big day! The TV crews showed up at my apartment promptly at 11:00. Between the "presenter", the producer, the lighting and sound folks there were ten people in my apartment! I had a nice chat with the translator. His sister is working on an advanced degree in the United States and you will not believe where! Minneapolis!!!! He is planning to spend Christmas with her this year so we are making plans to spend some time together. I told him I would like to take him to a football game (he says it is way too confusing) and ice fishing (I really was kidding but he sounded mildly enthused)! The interview was done in one take (I was good.....) and within an hour the cast and crew left the apartment. I'm glad I had picked up the house because they filmed every room in the house from many angles. It is scheduled to run Sunday, June 15. I'm trying to find someone who can record it for us. I'll also post the internet site if the video gets posted there. Now I just have to worry about the 10 pounds the camera adds!!!

Not much else going on. I'm researching places to go for our anniversary in July. We were going to go to Italy but we're told the weather is quite warm in July so we're pushing that back until September or October. Right now we're toying with Amsterdam or Paris (with the UK thrown in because it is my favorite city in the world). Someone mentioned Zurich so I may look at that as well. Isn't it weird??? If we were home we would be talking about New York or San Francisco. Who would have thought we'd even be mentioning these places other than in our dreams.

GO POLAND!!!!

Try Stockholm. I was in Stockholm exactly 10 years ago this July and it was wonderful. Visit Old Town and the Vasa Museum. The Stockholm Art Museum was pretty interesting.
